The Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s Fifteen Minutes of Fame

March 21st, 2008 by Rory Olsen

The late Andy Warhol told us that “In the future everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes.”  http://www.quotationspage.com/quote/30211.html

It would appear that the Rev. Jeremiah Wright has exceeded his quota considerably.

From reading his entry in Wikipedia  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremiah_Wright  it seems likely that the Rev. Jeremiah Wright was well known in Chicago and through out the country in African American ecclesiastical circles primarily for being the senior pastor of a megachurch in Chicago.   Had one of his congregants not elected to run for President of the United States of America, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright would be known primarily for those things and nothing more.

Of course, his congregant, Senator Barack Obama decided to run for president. Since Sen. Obama had written well of Rev. Wright, slowly but surely, inquiries were made into the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.  http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/30/us/politics/30obama.html?_r=1&oref=slogin   A few days after Sen. Obama ’s victory in Iowa, a friend sent me a link to the web site of the church pastored by Rev. Wright.  http://www.tucc.org/about.htm    I found the church’s ethnocentric emphasis as well as its use of the term “liberation” to be troubling.  From the comments that I saw on the Internet, my strong suspicion was that eventually someone in the mainstream media would ask questions about Sen. Obama’s choice of churches.

Everyone who hasn’t been in solitary confinement or a member of a sequestered jury panel probably knows by know that the Rev. Jeremiah Wright has now become famous–or perhaps infamous.

But today, I realized that the good man of the cloth had managed to pull off quite a PR coup of sorts. When I typed in Obama on YouTube today, the first entry to pop up wasn’t the Obama girl.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKsoXHYICqU.  No, she has been displaced by the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72B3tUAqpo4.

In our celebrity conscious world, pushing the Obama Girl aside is really big news.  I have to wonder, is someone out there working on a video combining the Obama Girl, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Sen. Obama?  The idea may seem absurd at first blush, but after the last few months of watching the Democratic Presidential primaries, can anyone say for certain that such a thing will not happen? I, for one, will not.
